THE PARISH OF SAINT MICHAEL
Who Are We?
The Parish of St. Michael 's located at 424 West 34th Street between 9th and 10 Ave's in the heart of Manhattan, New York, only minutes from the West Side Highway, the Lincoln Tunnel (leading to/from New Jersey) and Penn Station.
We like to think of St. Michael's as our "oasis" of prayer" in the Big Apple...New York City.... often referred to as the "center of the world."
Our Parish not only ministers to the people who live in the surrounding area but the many hundreds of Catholics who work in the area. Many attend Mass each day or just drop in to make a visit to the Blessed Sacrament. Many drop in to light a candle and say a prayer before our splendid twelve foot Crucifix. Of interest to our many visitors are the statues of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Infant of Prague, a replica of Michelangelo's Pieta, Our Lady of Grace, Our Lady of Fatima, Saint Joseph, Saint Anthony, Saint Therese, Saint Jude and, of course, a magnificent statue of Saint Michael the Archangel, our Patron.
The reason we like to think of our Church as an oasis for prayer is because we have been told so by the hundreds of visitors to our Church every year. Many have stopped in while passing by on their way to somewhere else but once in our magnificent Church they find that they don't want to leave. Indeed, they come back for visits whenever they can. Many attend our 12:10 Mass, Monday through Friday in order to participate in the Novena offered after the Mass.
The Blessed Sacrament is central to the Roman Catholic Faith so it is at the center of our Church, just behind the main altar and "encamped" within a raradose that evokes memories of mediaeval architecture and liturgical practice.
The Main Altar made of "Bethel White" granite was installed in our Church in the year 2000 and was the winner of the BENE award issued by Modern Liturgy's 1999-2000 Visual Arts Awards.
In stark contrast with the many thousands of altars around the world, the Main Altar at St. Michael's contains within it not one but four relics of American saints: Saint John Neumann, Mother Cabrini, Mother Seton and Blessed Kateri.
Our Church is 100 years old as of 2006 while our Parish is now 150 years
old having been founded in 1857.
We are very happy that part and parcel to our Parish is Saint Michael's
Academy for Girls. Opened in 1944 and run by the Presentation Sisters of New
Windsor, the Academy has a rich and fruitful tradition these many years,
graduating thousands of girls who now pass on what they have learned to
future generations. As of September 2007, Mrs. Clotilde Dillon serves as
principal.
We invite you, if you live in the area, to join our parish.
If you work in the area, attend daily Mass or to pay a visit.
Or if visiting the area, to stop in and spend some time with the Good Lord.
With Best Wishes,
May God Grant You His Peace,
Fr. Myles P. Murphy S.T.L.
